The Physical Abilities Test for police officers consists of three events administered in the following order:
SIDE STEP (Agility)
You will have 10 seconds to move from one side of a center line to the other side as many times as possible – Performed twice
CABLE PULL (Strength)
You will have five seconds to pull a pair of handles apart as hard as possible in a horizontal motion – Performed three times
STATIONARY BICYCLE (Endurance)
You will have two minutes to pedal as many revolutions as possible against a pre-set resistance – One try
Passing this test indicates only the minimum level of fitness required to begin academy training. Once in the academy as a new recruit, you will be required to perform physically at much higher levels.
If you are unable to perform any one of these exercises, you should initiate a regular physical fitness program to prepare yourself for the academy. Before beginning your fitness program, it is recommended that you receive a medical examination from your physician. Remember, you will not achieve excellent physical fitness overnight. It takes a great deal of physical and mental effort.
